This was brought to life in The Hunger Year. Bravo! This would also be a great book for middle and high schoolers when learning about the fascinating history of Vermont. A job well done, Lee! In rich historical detail, The Hunger Year brings to life the hard work and suffering of early settlers in Vermont and upstate New York where Magen Creed begins the arduous journey to her roots. An independent girl "of different blood," and a "sister to trees," Magen engages us page after page as she searches not only for family,but for "self." Resilient and determined to succeed despite the loss of a half sister and stepmother, she bears up through months of near starvation, wild weather,wolf attacks, and a lonely pregnancy. Yet there are glad moments, too the birth of twin ewes, days spent with her young love Gabe, conversations with her bold and generous aunt Eliza (the Female Farmer), and the aunt's loyal companion, Avery. Creed Farm soon becomes "all she (Magen) knew of God." The novel's "hunger" is both literal (mold on the summer crops) and spiritual as Magen accepts the "sometimes terrible" wisdom that sorrows bring. She learns to squeeze small pleasures out of each day, taking nothing for granted. "These times will pass," she allows, "and we'll endure." A masterful storyteller who knows how to keep the pages turning, Kemsley gives us a novel that is tender and emotive,yet refreshingly unsentimental.

We often think of history in the terms of war and battles, but Kemsley's portrayal is that of the human struggle to survive, not just the remnants of war and personal tragedy, but the unpredictable behavior of Mother Nature and what havoc she can wreak on the innocents that simply stand in her way.
Set in the early 1800's, following the War of 1812, 17 year-old Magen Creed begins a journey home that can only bring wisdom and maturity through the survival of insurmountable odds. After the death of her step-sister Carrie, Magen's step- mother, Sara, falls into despair over the loss of her own daughter. The only way to avoid starvation from the failing crops on their small New York farm is to relocate. With a map left to her by her absent father, Magen realizes that it leads to his home in Vermont.
With her dazed and grieving step-mother and a mule drawn wagon, Magen fearlessly sets out on a journey to Vermont. Alone and vulnerable, her strength is put to the test as the traveling turns deadly when her wagon becomes wedged on a dirt road and Sara is fatally injured. Now totally alone, Magen pushes forward and nearing her destination, meets Gabriel, a young man who knows of the Creed family farm. The author makes it is easy to envision Vermont in the 1800's and Magen's long journey, alone and unprotected on unpaved roads.
Magen's new friend Gabriel is a young man also on a personal journey. A carpenter by trade, he is smitten by her courage and looks, and offers to take Magen to the Creed farm, now owned and run by her Aunt Eliza. Somewhat afraid of what her reception might bring, she forges on and is quickly received into the embrace of her aunt. Finding Creed farm, Magan feels as if somehow divine intervention has finally brought her to a place she can truly call home.
The story is somewhat predictable, as Magen and Gabriel grow close, and she becomes pregnant with his child. With Gabriel temporarily absent, Creed Farm suffers some personal loss and one theme of "The Hunger Year" becomes clearly apparent as Mother Nature unleashes a series of events that turn the lives of New Englanders upside down.
A sweet and informative piece of historical fiction, "The Hunger Year" takes the reader back in time with an intimate glimpse of New England farm life and humanity at the mercy of world events, personal tragedy and the furious wrath of Mother Nature.

There was a Mt. Hunger near the town where I grew up in central Vermont. I imagine it was named at for the time told about in this story. I don't remember when I first heard about 1816 and Frozen-to-Death, but it was a long time ago, and it wasn't from a book. It must have been such a terrible event in the lives of Vermonters that the memory was passed down through the generations. Lee Kemsley's historical novel does a wonderful job of recreating the people and events of that awful year. We see it through the eyes of Magen Creed who is quarantined in a pest house with her half sister Carrie at the beginning of the tale. I love the historical backdrop of this story--Vermont in its infancy--but I love the characters even more. Magen is a strong, goodhearted young woman who struggles with many hardships but never gives up. From the very outset, I had the sense of her as a real person, someone I admired and was drawn to. Magen meets other such characters, and for me, it's these characters that make this such a good story. They are hard working, brave, and kind, and exactly the way I picture many of the early settlers of the Green Mountains. This book can rightly take its place with the best of the young adult literature set in Vermont, but it's also a book many adults will enjoy. I did! It's a beaut!

This is an interesting novel filled with historical information about the mid-1800's in New York and Vermont's Champlain Valley area. As a native of Vermont, I enjoyed the geographical and natural references. And I loved the story of Mae finding her way to her family's homestead and making a life for herself.
